Well, I'm ashamed to admit it, but this is my first one of the new year. I really aughta do this more often...

Well, this was done under 15 minutes with no reference. I opened up the program, drew a blue blob, and the rest took off on its own. I think I did well with the light on the right-hand shoulder, it makes the cloak look semi-beleiveable. The hood is a bit too large or something... I tried to create this one without mixing too many of the colours together, so you could see the individual strokes. I did okay in that respect, but it kind of makes the whole thing look... Undone or too simple. All in all, it's not that bad considering the time I put into it.

Hey Chris, check some of these out - I've only watched the first one, but it was pretty cool to see a persons painting come together in time-lapse.

I think it's best to let it all load up before playing, but for some reason it still went really fast for me (maybe it's a firefox thing ?? )

Anyways, enjoy d00d !

well, dont we all ! http://www.fnfclan.com/uploads/uploads/emoticons/default_biggrin.png

What i got out of seeing those cool images come out of nowhere is how much really comes together and just happens due to 'feeling' as opposed to some rigid attention to process or technique. These were all fast, loose, goofy drawing yet they turned out pretty impressive and i bet even the artist couldnt tell you where they were going till they were done.. I cant come anywhere close to this kind of painting ability but it makes me want to try just because it looked like alot of fun.. And you know, if you cant have fun, forget it.

Ill try and post some more stuff for you from our local art discussion board - Some of the work is meh-meh but some is so impressive it takes your breath away ( alot of times because it's just stuff people here do on their 'down time' .. man, i wish i had talent like that !! )

Keep up the good work Crill, you only get better by practice ! http://www.fnfclan.com/uploads/uploads/emoticons/default_biggrin.png

Well, I found that when I'm bored and stressed about something, I usually end up painting, playing my sax, or slaying some bots with the most gruesome game I have. Today, it was painting.

http://pictureposter.allbrand.nu/pictures/Crilix/Paintings/Alps%20-%20March%205%202005.jpg

It started out as a bunch of blue strokes. I added the white on top, and the formed mountains. I threw in a simple sky and a hill in the forground, and I had my scene. Then, being particularly mad about something, I scibbled all over the place. And found out that it looked well on the picture. I hit undo, and tried to do 'sensible' scribbling, and I think the effect worked out. I've never done anything with this style before, so I'm surprised as to how it turned out. The whole thing didn't take me long, perhaps 10-15 minutes.

Just gotta keep practicing, bro !

On the constructive tip, i think you left yourself alot of room in that last piece to finish the image off - Gotny plans to revisit it, or are you done with that one cril??

I'd suggest, if you're out of ideas, making it a North-Shore scene... every tried painting buildings liek you'd see on the shore from far away ? U should try !

Hm. The idea with that last one was that it was going to be quick and simple. However, you are right. It does look like more could be added, and I may go back and revisit it to add some 'detail'. We'll see how that works out, I've never really done vegetation before. I may get around to it, I may not. We'll see what life wants to do with me over the next little while. Oh, speaking of which, I'm going to Calgary for Spring Break, so I might not be around come this Saturday for about a week.

Somedays, I'm really ashamed to post this stuff that's supposedly "art". Anyways, here we go:

http://pictureposter.allbrand.nu/pictures/Crilix/Paintings/Nothing%20At%20All%20-%20May%203%202005.jpg

My very first self-portrait, if you can call it that. It's not really that true to me, currently my hair is much shorter. And when it is that long, it sure doesn't lay down like that. I did it this way so I could use it to cover my crappy looking ears. We'll call that my 'artistic license'. Origionally, it started off as me drawing my hat. I added a face, and as I can't do eyes either, used the hat to cover it up. The nose looks like it's from a comic strip, and the mouth is truly horrible. I guess when it comes down to it, there's nothing that good about this one. Well, I did do it without any reference (Save looking at my hat a few times...).

Oh, and it has just occured to me that I started painting about a year ago. I look back to my first crappy Vash painting, and I don't really see a big improvement. Maybe that's just me. I know I've since then learned to use the program more effectively, and I've been doing more drawings without having to look at a reference. I suppose that's progress. http://www.fnfclan.com/uploads/uploads/emoticons/default_huh.png

There's a comic strip or cartoon or something where the characters look like this.

I like it, Chris. Especially the hat.

My only complaint is that where in all your other paintings, the rose stood out so much, in this one, it's almost unnoticeable. Also, the background's kinda plain.

AS for improvement, I think you're taking a lil more time with some things. Like the hair in this one, shows you spent a lot of time on it, so does the hat. When I draw, I HATE doing backgrounds as well.

I look at it, and a problem is already evident. I've used the same brushing style and unstaturated colours on the face and background. They blend *far* more then they aught to, it's like you have to take a second to find what's holding up the hat.

As for the rose... Normally you'd figure it'd be a symbol for love or something. Seeing how nerds don't get the ladies (Well, in Agassiz at least) that isn't it. I guess it has to do with the elegance and endurance of the flower, it brings a whole new element into the scene. You can throw it in the oddest places (Like a battlefield, in a puddle, w/e) and it certainly adds a depth to the whole piece. A flower can stand through wind and rain, and still stand strong as if it'd had something to say. Maybe that's it. On a concious level, I can't say that I do flowers for a perticular reason, but subconciously perhaps I have the above connection to them.

Personally, I'm fine with how the rose in this one turned out. I wanted it to be subliminal, and I think colouring it would've cluttered the picture. I had a huge wall that I needed to fill, and a flower seemed like the right thing. It isn't very bold, but once your eyes catch it it makes the point.

And yes, my backgrounds do suck. They look rather blocky and simple, in my opinion. I wanted to keep with greys so that the character stood out more. The sky is *slightly* blue, but not enough so to overpower the whole scene. But the buildings... I really need to improve there. They're rather uninteresting. Learning how to do architecture is going to be tough...
