Reasons to get a PS3

Recommended Posts

I just got a nice little bonus for Christmas from work. I was thinking about putting it towards a PS3 (80GB), but, I'm not 100% convinced. I was standing in EB tonight pondering on why I should get a PS3.

Pros:

- Free online play

- Ability to play DivX files

- Wireless controllers

- Upcoming "killer" games

- Nice bundle deal (Motor Storm + a bunch of movies?)

Cons:

- Price (console)

- Price (games, $60+tax? ouch)

- Current lack of "killer" games

- Not 100% backwards compatible with all PS1/PS2 games

I've been thinking about the following games:

Lair

Heavenly Sword

Resistance

Armored Core 4

Out of those listed, what are they like? are they must buy games? what are some of the "must have" games for the PS3 that are currently out? I'm all about the multiplayer co-op or just being able to play the game with someone. With God of War 2 me and Steve ripped through that and it was totally awesome. I'm thinking that's what Heavenly Sword might be like, and, I believe Resistance is co-op as well. Lair, I've heard mixed reviews so I'm not too sure about this one. If AC4 is anything like the very first AC, I'm totally down with that.

On the wish list for upcoming games:

Little Big Planet

Metal Gear Solid 4

Final Fantasy Versus XIII

Final Fantasy XIII

If you have a PS3 aprox how much did it cost you when you got it? Did you just get the console and a game or how many games and how much did it total up to?

I've never played them, but i've heard that Lair is horrid especially the controls, Heavenly Sword is good but very short, Armored Core games are decent but never really exciting.

To be honest, I would get an Xbox 360 if your looking for a console to get right now. 50 bucks gets you xbox live for a year and there are a ton of great games out for the system. To a list a few, nothing beats Halo 3 for multiplayer and Co-Op, Mass Effect is just amazing and in my opinion worth by a 360 for, Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata are also great RPGs, Gears of War, Bioshock and Oblivion are also excellent games, though all 3 are for computer as well so you may have played them already, if you like fighting games Dead or Alive 4 is pretty sweet as well.

Right now you can get either a regular or elite bundle with Forza Motorsports 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance as well.

If you get an xbox, you can play with the rest of us.

If you get a PS3, we will laugh at you.

Honestly, Xbox Live is such a well done service that it's worth way more than the 50 bucks you pay for it (not sure how much it is Canadian).

PS3 is currently a waste. Blu-ray is losing the disc war, so the movie side of it is completely a nonargument IMO. 360 is cool because you can buy one of the older models off craig's list now that the elite is out and it's dirt cheap. However, 90% of the games that come out on the 360 and PS3 can be played on your PC. That is not the case however with the Wii. If you want a good all around console and your comp is lacking in the power area then pick up the 360. However, if you want a kickass console with great gameplay, an innovative controller system, and tons of new games slated for it (and which can only be played on said console) then get the Wii. The amount of money that is currently being dumped into game production for the Wii by 3rd party companies is big and only getting bigger now that the market has finally caught up with the idea. UBI soft has officially been quoted in saying that they are pulling their A-teams to start developing Wii content, which was not the case over the past year for any 3rd party developer.

...just my 2 cents.

Oh man, recently I have been craving a 360. I kinda think that it's a scam to have to pay to have multiplayer access (I have the game, the console, and an internet connection. What am I paying for, aside from a lil' piece of software that is usually free?), but lately there have been sooo many good games for it. I think the 360 currently has the best library. PS3-wise, there are only one or two games I wouldn't mind trying, but I'm not dying to play. Blu-Ray doesn't really interest me at all - I'm not enough of a videophile to buy a $600 device to play the discs, new discs themselves, and then a HD TV that would display them properly. Hell, I'm fine with watching a compressed DVD rip on my 19" monitor. I guess I can't offer any great insight, but I know if I had a phat bonus I'd put it towards a computer upgrade or 360. (To be honest, the thing I fear most about the 360 is its failure rate. I think I'd wait until they have that sorted out).

Has Microsoft fixed the flaw with the 360's? I haven't been interested in the XBOX / 360 at all, I can't really think of any game for the 360 that's not on PC or PS3 that would be a "must have". Halo, meh. I'm not much of a Halo fan at all. Played the first two both SP and MP and I wasn't too impressed. I don't always play on my console so getting a subscription to live wouldn't get its used enough to justify the $50/month(year?). The other negative is that the 360 will *not* have Metal Gear, Gran Turismo, Little Big Planet, Final Fantasy so there's my turn off right there (aside from the RRoD and that it's MS ;P).

The Wii is on my list of purchases to get (already bought Zelda when it first came out) but it's a tough choice. Yes, all the games I listed that wont be on the 360 wont be on the Wii either, but, imo the Wii has a greater potential than the 360 game wise. I say it's a tough choice because while there's good games for the Wii, in my mind the Wii is a more of a party console and the games seem to be more cartoonish where as the PS3's line up is more mature feeling.

I've always just been a supporter of Nintendo (GB, NES, SNES, N64, DS) and Sony (PSX, PS2, PSP). Because of the PSX and PS2 I have a collection of games already and that's a beneficial factor for getting the PS3. This is also another reason I wouldn't get a 360. If I had some XBOX games, that'd change things but I don't. Indem, I don't plan on buying Blu-Ray movies so if they're losing the disc war that's not really an issue for me, especially since the PS3 now supports DivX.

The only thing holding me back from getting a PS3 is the price tag and current lack of hit titles. I was hoping someone had experience with a PS3 either owning one or playing someones to give feedback on what the navigational system on the PS3 is like, or, if they've experienced any problems with the PS3 at all. Just all the "buyer beware" sort of things that would prevent someone from purchasing it just yet.

Frank, you can laugh at Keith. He has a PS3.

Cril, just saw your post. What games on the 360 are you hyped up about?

The new PS3 with a smaller harddrive and cheaper price doesn't play all the old games is what I'm hearing. Someone said that it is not backward compatible at all but I don't think that's true. I do know from people who are up on all the tech with the PS3 that it isn't completely backward compatible. I was also a big Sony PS fan but I just can't bring myself to buy a brand new console for $600+ that is basically the same as it's ever been but with nicer graphics. Know what I mean? At least with the Wii you are getting a cutting edge gaming experience as far as controlls go. And the adult content games are on their way, albeit, they will probably be toned down a little still (ie Manhunt 2) for another year. I don't know man, if I had money burning a whole in my pocket I wouldn't put getting a PS3 out of my mind completely but I think I'd rather get a Wii, PC upgrade, or a 360 first. And as far as Gran Turismo goes, that game flippin' owned. It's the only reason I bought the PS2 originally. That being said, they aren't cornering the market on racing games anymore. The cars, graphics, controlls, and customization that made that game the end all, be all are starting to be emulated by more than a handful of game makers, and they are doing it well. If you are Metal Gear Solid guy then I completely understand why you'd have to get a PS3. I am not a MG guy myself and I recently read an article about the developers of MGS that said that it was the last of the 3rd party exclusive games that will be made. The money just can't be recouped on exclusive console gaming anymore, and so it will either be the end of MGS (doubtful) or it will be an all platform game the next time they develope a new one.

Get a ps3 or a Wii. I've seen some amazing video's and the ps3 hasnt even been used to its full potential and the games that are out now for it are amazing. We've had one here for a while and at first I was like meh, no games!! But that is steadily improving and the games are getting more and more wicked. I'd say in a year or so, its going to outstrip the Wii and the xbox with awesome games. Final fantasy is also a huge reason why I'd get a ps3. Dont get me wrong, I'd love an xbox too, just for the amount of games that it has, but the ps3 is the way to go for now. Go go sixaxis controllers! Most ps2 games work as well. Havent come accross one that hasnt. Having said all that, I love my Wii http://www.fnfclan.com/uploads/uploads/emoticons/default_smile.png

If you think about it, if there hasnt been any real xbox games(and only on the xbox) that you have really wanted yet, most of the games are going to come out for xbox are going to come out on ps3 as well.

If it was cheaper then the PS3 would be the worth a buy based on graphic power, but it's not. It a personal opinion in the end. I just can't warrant spending that much on a gaming console that really only has the competition beat with it's graphic capability. Pretty games all to often suck IMO. Cool graphics don't have staying power. You don't continuously return to games because they look pretty. Case in point would be Tetris. People still buy Tetris to have on their phone and computer and iPod because of gameplay. I think the Wii is not unlike that. This is only the tip of the sword for the Wii IMO when it comes to games. The amount of people who have bought the Wii this year is incredible and game developers have taken notice. Not to say that the PS3 won't have great games because it will, but while people are holding down R1 for .5-3 seconds to range a grenade throw in FPS games, Wii players will actually be making the motions that dictate the range. While PS3 players will be moving their sights around with a stick remote Wii players will be holding actual replica guns and the reaction time will be quicker than any stick, or mouse for that matter. PS3 players will have an incredibly good looking Star Wars game sitting under their fingers this summer, but I'll be swinging my light saber and pushing foes back with my hands. Again, it boils down to what you like and how you play but for me that is the hook. If you play games just because of graphics and bragging rights then the PS3 will hold real value. If you play games because you like to be transported into other worlds and enjoy feeling like you are doing the impossible then it will still hold value but it will be a difference between manipulating characters with triangles and squares or actually making the same motions yourself.

Jesus, when the hell did I become a fanboy? /sigh

I say get the 360 because Xbox Live is as much a must have thing for it as a controller. Imagine Steam on a console. That's pretty much Xbox Live. Also, if you want hi-def movies but don't feel like being MADE to pay for it (like Blu Ray in the PS3) then there's the hd dvd add on that you can purchase.

I didn't take the time to read everyone else's posts, but I say get a PS3.... I need a friend!

Besides, Drake's Fortune is like tomb raider, but with better firefights.... oh, and no boobies.

ps3 isn't that bad I think the lower end one is $400 now right? That's same as 360 and you can play blu-ray. I will own both soon and I can say that blue ray and HD are about equal for movies, but blu-ray has a lot of moves HD doesn't. So if you're a big movie fan blu-ray is the way to go right now IMO and I'm not bias'd. 360 is probably better if you're big into gaming but honestly I rarely play mine. I played Halo 3 for a couple weeks when it came out and I like playing GRAW coop with friends, but other than that I don't play it. I hear mass effect is great but I doubt I'd get into it. Wii is pretty wicked fun Galaxies is addicting but I still have no reason to play it right now and have a tough time finding the time. I did play all the way threw twilight princess and it was amazing.

PS3 though for game titles Ratchet and Clank and Drakes Fortunes are the must haves from what I hear. MGS4 will be worth it right there though. GTA4 might also be better on PS3, tough to say though until that comes out but that will be the best game ever for anyone that is a GTA fan. IMO at least. Both are good buys, I use my 360 lots for HD, and the new update allows you to play burnt discs (I don't think many people know this) but you can play almost anything on a 360 now. I have some xvid videos that I had on my computer burnt them on a disc and they play great in the 360. So you can play all that media, either by burning it or over the lan connection you will have from your house once you set up your 360 with your PC. That is a pretty sweet feature if you download a lot of videos.

My friends have both too and they aren't huge gamers and prefer the PS3 just because of it's stability. 360's are hit and miss. My first one was a dudd but my second one has been amazing. My friends is kind of a POS though and I think that's why he prefers the PS3. It's really the same shit just depends what games you're into.

Oh and you're friend is right, the low end version is NOT backwards compatible at all.

Blu-Ray does have a lot of movie titles but right now HDDVD has more. Paramount recently left the Blu-Ray format and went to HDDVD which was a good sized hit for Blu-Ray because other studios are debating whether to follow. Plus, and this is a big plus, the fate of all video formats has been decided by one thing, pornography. Beta was left behind because the porno industry went with VHS. DVDs didn't start to take off until the porn industry really started to embrace it, which wasn't very long after it hit the market, which completely shut the door on laser discs. Right now the porno industry is for the most part only HDDVD and analysts forsee this as the sign that HDDVD will be the eventual winner in the disc wars. Reguardless of what Sony's American VPs say. http://www.fnfclan.com/uploads/uploads/emoticons/default_tongue.png
