VaderOnIce
edit- made a couple tiny changes. For Cody Cody you look for your road like a fat girl looks for love forgetting to look in the mirror I know what it is to plan for an early morning ride out. Goodbyes to the guys the night before. A slow drive past the old haunts. Look, it's the house that belongs to the old man you don't know but wave to every day. His kid's a delinquent. everyone goes to him for pot. He leans against his father and his fence on his bike every afternoon, waiting. I know the night before. everything is a possible last. Last time brushing your teeth at night in THAT sink. Last time peeking in on your parents good night. Last time sitting on that toilet with something to read. All of a sudden, everything in the house is newly discovered. Was the ceiling in the den really a white different than the wall? The dog. When did the dog die? There are 2 pictures of you in the living room. Middle school and high school. New fool and older fool. When did you start growing facial hair? Prom pictures. I went to prom with her? She's got 3 kids now. In the morning when you step out, your nervous breath catching that last bit of cold dying winter air, your memory it will be the sun rising on the first day of the rest of your life or something like that. The memory of the road will be a long noise of your tires pressing on, east, east, east. Remember when you got the car keys for the first time and they let you go alone? One big step out the front door. A hop into the seat air wheezing out of the old cushion. A good song on the radio. Nowhere to go but anywhere but here.
