Tool and Pearl Jam Reviews

General

Recommended Posts

Well, I got drunk and bored today because band practice was cancelled so I decided to set up an msn space. I then proceeded to do short reviews on the new Tool and Pearl Jam albums which I purchased this afternoon. I'm not sure what's worse, the fact that I'm too lazy to write more about them, or the fact that I still wrote twice as much about the Pearl Jam album than they wrote in the Province. Not to mention the fact that they didn't even review the Tool disc in the paper.

Check it out.

Feel free to visit the space occasionaly for random rants/cd reviews/whatever the hell else I feel like posting up there.

Finally, someone who disagrees with me! Can you perhaps explain to me why you think Lateralus is their best album? I'm genuinely curious, because I've never talked to anyone who has stuck up for anything other than Schism.

I can't wait to go get Tool's new album...as soon as I have spare money. Pearl Jam, I love their old stuff too, but the new stuff is pretty cool, I LOVE No Way. Not that 1998 is really considered new stuff...but back in the day it was, so keep your traps shut.

I agree with lestat though. I like Lateralus the best, although every thinks schism is the only good song, personally i think it's not even close. My fav. songs on that cd are The Grudge, The Patient, Parabola, Ticks & Leeches, Lateralus, Disposition, Reflection, and Triad. Yes, I know that's the majority CD (8/13), but if I leave any of those out it doesn't seem right. I love Triad but most people I know just hear it and say it's ok, which is when I attempt to remove their head with my hands... As for Parabola and Ticks & Leeches, you can't tell those songs aren't awesome, both definately in my Top 20 (along with The Patient in Top 5), and all the others fit in nicely inbetween the cracks. In conclusion: with 8 songs on the cd that I REALLY like, plus schism (which is a great song), Faaip De Oiad is a really weird song, but it's great to scare people with. Eon Blue Apocalypse (the name is almost longer than the song...) I found pretty cool, although most people just skip it over because there are no words or hard rockness to it. Like I said earlier, the other two (Mantra and Parabol) fit in nicely between the cracks. Altogether that's 13/13 songs, which makes it #1 IMO.

*Listens to The Patient and tells everyone else to go listen because it owns.

EDIT: I once knew a kid named lestat...... COINCIDENCE?! I think not!

well just off the top of my head I totally love "the grudge". I love how the song progresses emotionally from literally holding onto a self destructive grudge gradually seeing the error in its ways and promoting forgiveness. I like how his voice changes to reflect his mood change throughout the song.

the patient has a haunting beauty that just appeals to me.....

schism is freakin awesome as well, amazing video and I really like the guitar and how its not afraid to go long, regardless of potential radio play time...

parabol/a is great too, not sure why. Just a typical song for what I think of and like about Tool....

Lateralus has a gradual start that makes me think of the pull of the tides with the moon or billowing storm clouds rolling out toward you with that cool.damp feel in the air before a storm...

I dont play instruments so I dont know any technical terms or anything, just listing off some random thoughts as to why I like it so much. But music is entirely subjective so to each his own.

Fair enough, Morgan. I guess the reason why I love Undertow the best is because Sober has a KILLER groove. I mean, I play drums and I Can play the groove, and it's amazing. Plus, back when I was taking drum lessons, even my drum teacher couldn't figure out that intro fill. It's just an uber song. It just has so many pimp songs. Swamp Song is one of my favourites of all time, it's just an amazing album. I definately don't think Lateralus is a bad album compared to most shit, but compared to every other Tool album (including Opiate) I think it's dogshit. At least from a songwriter's point of view. As a drummer's point of view, Lateralus is sick, but I'm trying to think outside that box now. It feels to me that the new Tool album is trying too hard to copy the groove that Schism had, because Schism sold records, but rock and roll isn't about selling records. Rock 'n Roll is, by definition, doing what the fuck you want to do when the fuck you want to do it. I have approximaetly 12 Jager bombs in me so I apologize if this doesn't make any sense to you, but that's what I think. Peace.

Every so often, when seeing this topic pop up on my new posts search result, the title looks like Toejam and Earl. Am I dyslexic or was that just a great name for a game?

I'd love to Steve, the only problem is that I only buy albums I think I'll like. Not being an actual columnist, I don't get free copies of albums, but if you or Frank or anyone, for that matter, could provide me with a link to download a particular album, I'd give it a shot every week. I'd probably only do one album unless there were more than one that I was really interested in. I actually think that would be a good project for me because then on a week where I didn't know about ANYTHING that was coming out, I'd be forced to listen to some new music. Upon second though, which is still occuring in the same thread, I'm totally in!
